In Lisbon and reunited with Kevin! This is the last leg of my Europe trip 😭, but I’m ready to get back to Austin. Lisbon is so shockingly *packed* with people. It has winding, tiled, cobblestone streets and hills like SF that make you climb heavenwards. Even their bridge is painted red. We scootered along their version of Embarcadero and marveled at this city, which honestly can’t be compared to any U.S. place.

We’ve also had amazing food so far. Breakfast spreads, coffee that tastes like Sightglass, and octopus and cod for dinner!もっと詳しく

Got to Porto yesterday after a 4.5 hour bus ride, and immediately ate Taiwanese food, because… desperate times. Porto is a tiny seaside town, and it’s idyllic next to the water. In the non-touristy areas, it looks almost abandoned with its shuttered storefronts. I miss the Camino. It feels odd to walk around without a clear goal or destination. To only walk 8 miles a day feels like cheating?

At least I’ll see Kevin in Lisbon in two days. It’ll be the last leg of my Europe trip!もっと詳しく

WE DID IT!!! 13 miles to Santiago!

Everyone was completely jazzed this morning. I saw the French couple in the morning, and we took a selfie :) After 8km, we saw a glimpse of Santiago and its cathedral in the distance. It was the most beautiful tiny pinprick of a church I’d ever seen. We hiked down a big hill & could see Santiago the entire time.

Once we reached the cathedral, we saw friends from the road & hugged and congratulated each other. Many laid on the ground, on top of their backpacks. ‘Tis a good day.

French fries eaten: every day

17 miles to O Pedrouzo. Didn’t sleep well last night, so today was *tough.* At one point, I kicked off my shoes and socks, and just spread myself on the grass. When I got up, I saw the French couple again, and we walked the last four miles together.

“Is it okay if we sing?” they asked me. “It helps us.” (Marie’s feet hurt, badly.)

“Yes! Please. It would help me, too,” I said.

Together, they sang a pilgrim song called “Ultreia” in French, and then taught me how to sing the “un kilometre a pied” song, which they say is used to encourage kids to walk further 😂. They sang it yesterday, too, as we neared our albergue, and it was so catchy, I couldn’t stop hearing it in my head.

We’re at Albergue Edreiro today. Only 11 miles left to Santiago!もっと詳しく

18 miles to Boente’s Albergue Fuente Saleta. Met a man who walked and played his guitar at the same time. And also saw the French couple again! I’ve seen them since day 2 or 3.

Marie, 71, and Andres, 73, married in 2017 and then walked 2,000km together — starting somewhere in France through the Camino del Norte, and then to Finisterre. It took them 3 months. Now they spend their days protesting nuclear bombs 😭.もっと詳しく

16.3 miles to Albergue La Fuente del Peregrinos, a donativo albergue, run by Christian volunteers from all over the world. Seeing tons of new faces today. Lots of fresh pilgrims from Ponferrada or Sarria with clean clothes, clean backpacks and a bounce to their step. (I’m jealous, clearly.)もっと詳しく

17.3 miles today. And less than 100km left until Santiago! Can’t believe there are only 4 days left. I remember when I was only 4 days into the Camino and wondering how I’d survive the next 3.5 weeks. Adam told me I shouldn’t complain, because I was lucky to have the time, while he had to go back after Leon for work.

This morning, on the San Xil route, with the scenery shrouded in fog, I felt grateful. I have an amazing life. I’m so lucky to be able to do this walk every day.

14 miles. Lots of morning fog over the mountains. Right now, I’m staying 1km further from Triacastela, on the San Xil route. The Albergue Ecologia a Beso is wonderfully meditative and calm. I sat in a hammock, overlooking the forest. My friend Sarah (UK) joined me here. The albergue couple (hosts) are actually renting the albergue for a year. They met on the Camino in 2015 and stayed in this same albergue then. Vegan food for dinner.もっと詳しく

Finally in the last region, Galicia! 17 miles to the municipal albergue in this little hobbit town, O Cebreiro, and there are 80 beds in one dormitory. No curtains on the showers, either 😳. But I walked the last 6 miles of uphill with Madalina!もっと詳しく
