      Santa Cruz/ Santarem

      May 2 in Portugal ⋅ ☁️ 16 °C

      Gute Nacht, bin geschafft😌

      Letzte Bratwurt vor Amerika

      May 2 in Portugal ⋅ ☁️ 16 °C

      A rare car-adjacent highlight

      May 1 in Portugal ⋅ ⛅ 13 °C

When you travel alone you can make an art out of idling, in a way that for all my progress I don't think I could achieve with almost anyone else - I'd be conscious of what they wanted to do, if they were bored/cold/tired.

There's also nobody to tip the scales either way when you do something a bit *naughty* like trespass because hang on SURELY that's not still an operational mechanics?

Although I don't think I really did. Surely it's quasi-public space? One raised eyebrow or attention attracting hollering and I'd have scuttled though. I told you that breakfast was a gateway to the criminal underbelly.

      Anyway. What a garage.

Bat the bread, win a bread

      May 1 in Portugal ⋅ ☁️ 12 °C

A few months ago, I messaged Branna with what I was pretty sure was a revelation.

Using lots of exclamation marks, I made proprietary noises about the concept of self care through disassociation, i.e, pretend there's a child that needs rest and nutrition and fun and love and dedicate yourself to its service. The child just happens to be you.

I got the hump when she pointed out how fucking obvious and ancient that thinking is, but as a card carrying people pleaser, externalising a person to please works for me.

This kid had an absolute whale of a time today. I said yes to everything. You're a bit wet? We'll have a sit down in that warm bar. You want one of those snacky things? We'll have two. That's shiny? Swipe the card babe. Tired? Nap time! I love you. I love you too. Midnight snack? Good idea.

      Lisbon, Portugal Day 2

      May 1 in Portugal ⋅ ☀️ 12 °C

We opted for a private Tuk Tuk ride today.

We met our guide at 9 AM.

We had a wonderful day learning about all of Lisbon's important structures, parks, street art, and tile mafia.

      Our guide was wonderful.

We returned to the ship around 1 PM and had lunch.

      I worked on blog.

We were invited to an event this evening where we would eat at the Captain's Table with the group we went to Marrakesh with along with Heather Clancy, Henry, Krystal, Luann and Rob. I got the time wrong and we showed up about 45 minutes late. I know that I am really exhausted because I rarely get my times mixed up.

      We had a lovely evening.

      Lisbon, Portugal

      April 30 in Portugal ⋅ ☁️ 19 °C

The hairstylist had to cancel my previous appointment due to illness, so I had it rescheduled for today at 8:00.

After my hair appointment, I went back to the room and tried to pay our roofing contractor one more time.

We went to lunch at 11:30 AM. Jenni joined us at lunch. I tried to talk her into seeing if she could join our tour as she didn't have a tour for the day. She said that she would think about it.

I ran downstairs and picked up our passport for the final time.

We then got our coats on and headed out for the tour.

We asked the excursion person if there was room for Jenni. She indicated that they had confirmed Jenni on the tour and we were assigned to the same bus.

Once on the bus, I called Bank of America's fraud department because they blocked my online payment to our roofing contractor. I am hoping that this payment will finally go through.
We could immediately tell that we had a good guide today. He gave us a lot on information and had a great sense of humor.

We drove to the Queluz Royal Palace while the guide gave us information on the history of Portugal.

The Queluz Royal Palace was impressive. We toured several wings of the palace and the garden.

We then drove to the quaint, hilly town of Sintra. Our guide was from Sintra so he was a wealth of information regarding the town. There is a National Palace located in Sintra but entrance to this palace was not part of the tour. We toured the "garden" of the National Palace which was really a pour excuse a garden.

Bob, Jenni and I walked through the town. We toured an actual artist school where students were working on tiles and other ceramic art.

We met the group just outside the National Palace, walked to the bus, and then had a drive along the coastline.

The traffic was bad so we didn't get back to the ship until around 7:00 PM. We quickly changed and had dinner in the restaurant with Jenni because lobster thermidor was on the menu.

We really enjoyed our first day in Portugal. It was nice to have a great guide.

      Sintra, May 1

      May 1 in Portugal ⋅ ⛅ 16 °C

A full day of seeing the National Palace of Pena where the last kings and queens of Portugal lived before the 1910 revolution ended the monarchy and the Castle of the Moors, and 11th century fortress which eventually fell to the reconquest of the Iberian Peninsula. Did not start well. We paid to take a bus up to the palace. We had traveled less than mile when traffic stopped - due to a bus up the road which had managed to block traffic and not get turned around. So we abandoned the bus and walked - asking for lots of directions along the way. Toured the very crowded palace at 3 p.m. and the palace grounds, then we walked to the Castle of the Moors and hiked up the battlements to the top for views in all directions including the Atlantic Ocean, the Tagus River, downtown Lisbon, and all of the Sintra area. Very interesting visit. Then we hiked down a trail - which sort of vanished when we got to the outskirts of town requiring Google maps to help us find our way. Stopped at a small cafe for wine, coffee, and an appetizer then returned to the Apeadeiro restaurant for a full dinner complete with cheesecake, port, and two pastries, the last port and pastries courtesy of the restaurant.Read more

      Sintra, Portugal, April 30

      April 30 in Portugal ⋅ ☁️ 18 °C

Took a Uber to the bus station then a bus ride from Porto to Sintra. Nice ride with Wifi. Checked in to the Villa Aedan using an Uber - which had a tough time figuring out where it was. I had trouble locating the place on Google maps, too. After some unpacking we walked to the recommended Apeadeiro restaurant and had a nice mid-day meal. They even provided a glass of port and a pastry to each of us at the end of our meal. From there we walked to the Quinta de Regeleira a private mansion with lots of novelties now owned by the City of Sintra as a tourist attraction. Fun place including the Well of Initiation, a 70' plus hole excavated in limestone with a circular stairway winding around an open center. Several quirky towers, lots of exotic flowers and trees with a chapel and a mansion right out of The Adams Family (the old TV show). Google maps gave us some trouble here and we ended up walking the wrong way for a while, adding a half mile or more to our walk to the entrance. Our entrance fee was seven euros - the cost for people over 65. Returned to our room at the Villa Aedan which requires three keys to get in. One for the front gate, one for the front door, and then one for the room. Walked into town again to explore and bought two clementines at a local store. Ate the last of the Queso Cabrales from Cangas de Onis.Read more

      Porto, Portugal April 29

      April 29 in Portugal ⋅ ☁️ 18 °C

To the Clerigos church and tower at 9 a.m. We were first in the line! About a 200' climb up circular stairs to the two observation levels near the top of the tower. Beautiful 360 degree views. Then down to the Burmester cellars on the other side of the Luis 1 bridge for a short tour of the cellars followed by port tasting. Enjoyable. Nice conversation with people from Austria and Poland at our table. topped by a quirky business that sells canned seafood with interesting labels. On to visit the World of Wine (the chocolate and cork exhibitions). Nice exhibitions with occasional errors in English. But overpriced. Returned to the apartment stopping by a small restaurant for Curry Dourada (fish) along the way.Read more

      Bus to Fatima Portugal

So last night at 7 pm the Italian couple arrived to be Hospitaleros. No sign of the other 2 and I don't know if they ever came as I went to bed early🥱
