      Regen, Regen und... Regen

      Nach einer Xtrem ruhigen Nacht ging's weiter durch die Berge zurück auf die Hauptroute. Sind heute durch die Departements Creuse, Haute Vienne, Dordogne , Lot et Garonne und zu guter Letzt nach Landes gefahren. Schön waren die Wechsel der Landschaften von Viehhaltung über Trüffel, Apfelplantagen, Weinreben und dann Gemüseplantagen alles dabei.

      Im Perigord, mit 1001 Schlössern, war es besonders schön..und die Sonne gab's auch immer Mal wieder bis kurz nach Bergerac. Hier fanden wir auch die okzitanischen Doppelnamen an den Straßenschildern. Ein kurzer Stopp mit Kaffee und Nusskuchen hellte die Regenstimmung etwas auf. Nachdem man meinen könnte, wir wären etwas langsam unterwegs, haben wir heute bis Houeille dann doch 300 km abgerockt . Hier gab's Pizza, nein nicht aus dem Automaten, wie man sie hier alle Nase lang an Parkplätzen findet, sondern vom fahrenden "Pizzatier"- Achtung: hier ist kein animalischen Wesen am Werk gewesen. War die lecker!!!!

      Leider lag diese wie ein Stein im Magen, aber das Prasseln des Dauerregens lullte uns dann doch ein und wir hatten eine angenehme Nacht.

      Heute wollen wir versuchen die spanische Grenze zu überqueren...mal gucken ob das klappt, sind ca. 230 km 😊      Read more

      Day 11

      Besuch Teste de Buch + Dünenfliegen

      Es geht heute ganz gemütlich los. Unsere Windvorhersage hatte gute Bedingungen für den Nachmittag vorhergesagt.

      Also kauften wir zuerst am Morgen im Camping eigenen Supermarkt für Frühstück und weitere Mahlzeiten ein. Nach dem Frühstück mussten wir noch kurz ein Malheur beseitigen: unser Auto war über Nacht von Vögeln attackiert worden - man konnte vor lauter 💩 nicht mehr aus der Windschutzscheibe schauen… also musste mit heißem Wasser 🚿 abgespült werden.

      Danach machten wir uns dann auf zu einem kleinen Ausflug: wir planten über die Düne nach Norden zu gehen zum kleinen Ort „Teste de Buch“, wo es einige sehr schöne Hotels - und hoffentlich auch Cafés - geben würde.

      Der Spaziergang war sehr schön und auch einigermaßen anstrengend, dort so im Sand herumzustapfen. Direkt am Anfang sahen wir schon einige Gleitschirme beim Groundhandling - und ein paar flogen auch schon!

      Wir gingen jedoch weiter. Man hatte eine tolle Sicht vom höchsten Punkt, wirklich verrückt, diese Düne! Es sieht wirklich ein bisschen aus wie die Wüste.

      Im Ort angekommen waren wir sehr zufrieden mit unserer Unterkunftswahl: hier waren eigentlich nur Villen - und nichts los in der Stadt. Das einzige - und auch sehr nette - Café war das vom Nobelhotel Haïtza. Wir genossen ein Getränk und 2 x Eis 🍧. Danach nahmen wir den Bus zurück zum Camping 🚌

      Hier machten wir uns bereit für die Düne und packten unsere Sachen. Als wir an der Düne ankamen war schon viel los - allerdings auch sehr viel Wind 💨 also stiegen wir fast bis ganz unten herab und packten aus.

      Die ersten Versuche waren noch ziemlich ruppig und dauernd saß man wieder am Po oder rannte dem Schirm nach. Zum Glück wurde es etwas besser und ganz am Ende des Tages, nach 4 Stunden Schwerstarbeit, gelang uns endlich der erste richtige Flug. Herrlich!

      Am Abend schauten wir dann noch Videos. Vielleicht gibt es ja noch Tipps und Tricks, wie wir besser zurechtkommen? 🤓      Read more

      Day 15

      Mit dem Rad rund um‘s Bassin d’Arcachon

      Heute hatten wir einen großen Plan: einen Radausflug von unserem Campingplatz aus rund um das Bassin d‘Arcachon. Fast 100km mit dem Fahrrad. 🚴‍♀️🚴‍♂️

      Erstmal Glück gehabt am Anfang: natürlich hatten wir für die spontane Aktion keine Fahrräder reserviert, und waren dann umso glücklicher als uns der Campingplatz die allerletzten beiden Fahrräder überlassen hat. Sonst hätte die Tour aufgehört bevor sie begonnen hatte. 😅

      Die Strecke war bunt gemischt. Manche Teile waren leider entlang der recht stark befahrenen Landstraße (wenn auch mit separatem Radweg), andere mit schön gestalteten Radwegen entlang des Strandes. Highlights gab es viele:

      - Ein kleiner alter Hafen mit schön gestalteten Bootshäusern 🤩

      - Der schöne Ort Andernos Les Bains, wo wir Mittagspause machten und bisschen flaniert sind 🍦

      - Der südlichste Punkt am Cap Ferret und ein kleiner Strand dort, wo wir einmal beide in den Atlantik gesprungen sind und man einen tollen Blick auf das Meer und die Düne hatte 🏖

      - Die Überfahrt mit dem Schiff zurück nach Arcachon ⛴

      - Die vielen kleinen Kirchen, die uns irgendwie an unsere Reise in Kolumbien erinnerten ⛪️

      Zum Abendessen gönnten wir uns einen Besuch im Restaurant - zum selber kochen waren wir dann doch zu müde 😮‍💨      Read more

      Archachon

      Ganz schön viel los in Archachon. Ein kleiner Bummel über den Strand und den Markt. Es gibt tolle Sachen, aber sündhaft teuer, teils 4 mal soviel wie in Andalusien. Ein Kilo Dorade hier 26 Euro, im Mercadonna in Campohermoso 6 Euro.Read more

      Bordeaux!

      We spent the day exploring Bordeaux till late into the evening. So many beautiful things to see. What I’ve seen so far of Europe is truly magical. It feels like a fairy tale sometimes.

      We went to SO many places I can’t even describe them all. Pey-Berland tower (231 step spiral staircase - climbed it!), St Andre Cathedral, Palais Rohan, Grosse Cloche (clock and bell tower), took an open air bus tour, walked the Jardin public gardens, Porte Cailhou & Porte de Bourgogne (two old gateways - when it was walled - to the city that still stand), St Michael Cathedral & the Pont de Pierre (bridge). Then we stayed until dark and explored a lot of the city lit up. Beautiful!

      Things I don’t like about France: the food, and the people haven’t been especially friendly or kind. Unfortunately stereotypes have rung true. Things I loved about France: the desserts, and the beauty of everything around me.      Read more

      Day 4

      South toward the trail

      It was a confusing and tense morning of ticket and train matching. What would have been a simple fix in the old days of lots of station masters who can answer questions is now just a guy you wait in line for an hour to talk to who has no power to touch a Eurrail pass. I think God solved the problem for us. I think. 🤔 I activated our passes but according to my app it called my activation date my first day of travel (we get four) That leaves us one day short. I had reservations to get on the train today and I had activated the passes yesterday but my misunderstanding of what “activation” meant has us messed up. They say on the trail “the Way” will provide. The ticket collector was satisfied with the reservation tickets and didn’t actually check my Eurrail pass. That gives us back a day. The Way did provide. (Before you think I’m getting too mystical, read John 14:6. That’s my understanding of The Way.)

      So now we are getting out of the city on the TGV going 300 km/hr for a smaller, slower town. Jon and I have never been to Bordeaux and since the train from Paris to St Jean ran though here anyway we decided to get off and look around. Paris, a city known for style and fashion was hard for me with my three practical zero fashion hiking outfits and no makeup or styling products. I’m sure I looked like a homeless person to them but on the trail I think I’ll fit right in.

      I think the whole world is in a heat wave right now. It’s 104 F in Bordeaux. Yuck. It will cool off before the hike but it will also be rainy. Hmmmmm. Which is better?!

      On the upside, our two rooms in the Hilton are luxurious compared to that one room in the hostel in Paris. (These were way cheaper too!)

      I also saw another couple that was dressed like us- probably other Camino hikers. Slobs unite!

      We went to the old town of Bordeaux which turns out was settled by the Romans. I drank from an ancient Roman well (I’m sure the water was fine) and we stumbled on a cathedral that was built in 800’s. No… not 1800’s! My bucket list thing was to put my 104F feet into the Miroir d eau.

      Considering Europe is known for their lack of ice and tepid beer I’m surviving considerably better than I’d have thought. I just really want an ice cold water though.      Read more

      Day 48

      Travel day

      We left Paris today and headed to Bordeaux, France. It’s about 35 miles from the western coast. We took a high speed train for the trip and It definitely felt much faster than any US train I’ve been on. We were greeted at the train station in Bordeaux by a stairway, with of all things, a picture of Multnomah Falls painted on the steps. We couldn’t believe it!! No explanation - just the pic.

      We got to our Airbnb and then headed downtown to explore a bit. I wasn’t sure what we’d find here, but so far, as always I’m amazed at the wonderful sites we stumble upon.

      We just wandered today, but what we found was SO beautiful. The old streets, buildings, alleys are so quiet and peaceful. The vibe of the city is so laid back and enjoyable. Eventually we laid down in a grassy park, in the shade and took a nap with hundreds of others doing the same. We had hand scraped snow cones and we eventually found the “Miroir d’eau”. It’s on the riverside and is the largest mirror in the world - 3450 m sq - made of water. Hundreds of kids and families were playing in it. The mirror area would fill up - maybe 4-6” - and then start draining leaving a thin film of water on the black concrete. And then magically, it would reflect EVERYTHING! It was absolutely gorgeous - and refreshing to walk around in. This was a great start for our short time here.      Read more

      Day 50

      Last day in Bordeaux

      Our last day in Bordeaux was unique - we went to La Cite du vin, which is a wine museum!! It was a really modern museum that took you thru everything to do with wine that you could think of, and ended with a tasting on the top of the building overlooking the city. Was a very cool experience.

      Then we headed over to Bassin de Lumieres for a one hour show. This was absolutely incredible! This exhibit is very hard to describe. It was works of art, paintings, graphically set to music and somewhat animated - displayed over the water, and on all the walls and floor in an old MASSIVE submarine bay from WW2. The French have done a remarkable job of repurposing old buildings. This literally brought me to tears at one point, as it was almost overwhelming to all the senses. The videos and pictures won’t do it justice. It was absolutely mesmerizing.

      We also walked by the most amazing wine store I’ve ever seen. Three stories, straight up, all displayed on a spiral staircase. It caught my attention.

      Finished the evening hanging around a Starbucks (to use their wifi to plan our next city), and then had wine, bread, cheese and meats for dinner sitting outside at a cafe. Beautiful night.      Read more

      Commensacq

      Vanochtend zag het er donker uit buiten... omdat het hier nogal eens snel kan gaan regenen heb ik geen risico genomen en dat was maar goed ook..... eigenlijk de hele ochtend en nog later in regenbuien gefietst terwijl ik door bossen reed waarvan je het einde niet zag. Er werd veel hout afgevoerd omdat er kennelijk brand was geweest, vrachtwagen combinaties vol....af en aan...
      Tot vroeg in de middag ging dat zo door. Ik reed een dorpje in en zag het bordje Pissos. Ik dacht tijd voor een boterham maar toen begon het me toch een partij te hagelen, ongelofelijk. Ik drukte me tegen de gevel van een pand en kwam redelijk weg... maar goed terug naar het plaatsnaambordje, mijn overnachtingsplaatsje dacht ik bij mezelf en dan kon het niet ver meer weg zijn.. althans dat dacht ik.. maar goed een km of 5 verder zag ik het plaatsnaambord weer en werd het tijd om de locatiegegevens erbij te halen en zodoende reed ik Pissos werd uit, gelukkig in de goede richting.. enfin 12 km verder zag ik inmiddels een andere plaatsnaam, Commensacq, een plaats buiten de St Jacobsroute... maar goed de accomodatie maakte veel goed en morgen dus eerst weer op de route komen en dan door naar Dax.
      Internet heeft toch wat problemen in deze plaats, krijg mijn foto's niet ge upload... morgen dus. O ja de foto van de druiven... nu zo klein maar straks even mooie tros.      Read more

      Commensacq

      Tot Pissos hadden gelukkig variatie in de wegen. Onverwacht aangenaam om te fietsen. Vanaf Pissos is het weer rechte wegen, pal in de zon, enkel uitzicht op naaldbomen gegarneerd met slecht wegdek. Blij na 84 km op onze bestemming te zijn blijkt dit wel de magerste overnachting tot nu toe te worden. Boven zijn slaapgelegenheden, afgeschermd met gordijnen. Aan de andere zijde slaapt de beheerster die zich het best laat omschrijven als een moeke. Naar beneden lopend om te douchen schreeuwt wijdbeens ' kommis', en terwijl zijn de asperges aan het schillen is: 'meeeten?'. Als ik vriendelijk bedank en zeg dat we nog brood hebben voor vanavond: 'niet boven eten!' terwijl ze met haar vinger een streng gebaar maakt. Oeps, we voelen ons weer op kamp. Vroeg slapen maar.Read more
