    Finally Home 🏠

    July 5, 2023 in the United States ⋅ 🌧 77 °F

After what seemed like forever flying through the air and the longest day ever (we landed before we even took off- thanks time zones), we finally made it back to Brookfield. Overall the flight was good, premium economy was SO nice. We all got some sleep, except maybe Dad who watched all three movies of the Hobbit trilogy, and were ready to be home. We touched down in Chicago early, but due to a lightning storm we were unable to pull up to a gate. We waited about 30 minutes and then were able to pull up and start getting our stuff, however, they made us sit down again because the crews were still not cleared to come out due to the storm. After another 20 minutes or so they finally opened the cabin doors and let us all out :).

We made it through immigration no problem, but got stuck at the baggage claim. We ended up waiting for about 2 1/2 hours for our luggage to come out. We eventually learned that the crews were still delayed because of the storm. But more and more people kept getting off planes, so more and more people were being crammed into the baggage area with no bags coming out. Additionally, they are doing renovations at O’Hare, so there were only 3 bathrooms. It was quite the line.

After what seemed like forever, we were able to gather our bags, get through customs and out the doors to find Uncle John. He had patiently been waiting for us since our plane touched down. We loaded up one last time and were on our way home.

It is so nice to be back in our own beds, now, we just have to adjust to a new time zone. We will if we will sleep tonight! It truly was a trip of a lifetime.

    Last Day

    July 5, 2023 in New Zealand ⋅ 🌬 57 °F

Today was our last day! We woke up in beautiful Auckland and packed our bags one last time. We then stowed them in the lock room so we could explore Auckland for the day.

Our first stop of the day was Devonport. To get to there we needed to take a 7 minute ferry. We purchased our tickets and were off! It was beautiful to be on the Harbour and take in sights of Auckland and surrounding areas. Once we arrived we walked up the Main Street and did some souvenir shopping before hiking up Mt. Victoria - an old, old, volcano. We enjoyed the views from the top, before it started to drizzle and we headed down. We caught another ferry back to downtown.

We then grabbed some lunch at a place called Taco Medic that claimed to be “a taco oasis where no stress can get to you.” Perfect! We enjoyed lots of nachos and margaritas before heading out again. We continued to window shop on the way to the Auckland Sky Tower.

The Auckland Sky Tower was 60 floors up with incredible views! We were able to pick out the building that we had been staying in for the last two nights, as well as boats all over the harbor, and stadiums (that we guess will be used for the Women’s FIFA World Cup in a couple weeks!). We even got Dad to come up!

After enjoying the views we headed to the Sky bar and got some fancy desserts! They were just as delicious as beautiful. We were able to watch some people do the “SkyJump” where they do a “controlled fall” off the tower!

We then headed back to gather our luggage and catch an Uber to the airport. We made it to the airport in no time, and were immediately in awe that our upgrade (we had put in a bid to the upgrade lottery a week ago, and found out yesterday we got it! We are now all flying Premium Economy home!) got us a special check-in line and area as well as an express lane through customs (In addition to more legroom).

We are now sitting at our gate and reflecting on all the amazing memories we’ve made this trip :) It has definitely been a trip of a lifetime!

    Gandalf, Geysers + Glow Worms

    July 4, 2023 in New Zealand ⋅ 🌬 57 °F

Today was a great day in New Zealand (named incidentally, after Zeeland in the Netherlands 😁). It started bright and early with a 6:30 AM pick up by our tour guide and driver, Chris. He had a lot of interesting facts and information! We picked up two other groups, a family of four from Houston and three travelers on holiday from the Netherlands.

After an hour and a half bus ride we arrived at middle earth (Hobbiton, the location where the outside scenes from Frodo Baggins’ village in the Lord of the Rings films were filmed). It is out in the middle of farmland, with rolling green hills covered with sheep and cattle. We (really just Ken) got some souvenirs in the gift shop and then a Hobbiton guide led us through the village. They went into an incredible amount of detail making the six middle earth films, including a large fake oak tree where each one of 300,000 plastic leaves were individually painted and attached. We got to see Bag End, Bagshot Row, and the mill. The hobbit holes were varied in size to account for the different size of the characters (Hobbits are a little over 3 feet tall and the wizard Gandalf was full-sized), despite all the actors being regular sized people. We ended the tour at the Green Dragon Inn where we were given a souvenir mug and cup of ale or cider. We sipped our ale as we sat by the toasty fire.

After Hobbiton we headed for Rotorua which sits on two tectonic plates which are hitting each other creating a giant area of boiling mud and water. There is also a geyser called Te Puia that erupted 15-20 feet into the air. We had an excellent buffet meal at the geyser.

Our final stop of the day was at the Waitomo Glow Worm Caves. We were led on our tour by Nah, a descendent of the Māori Chief who discovered the cave. After a brief talk about the history of the cave we went in. It was so cool! There were so many stalactites and stalagmites slowly (so very slowly) growing together. We made it to a large space called Cathedral Cave which has amazing acoustics. We were regaled by a couple of our fellow tourists with songs! A river runs through the cave and we took a boat out onto the river to see the glow worms. In order to see the glow worms there are no lights in this part of the cave and it was almost pitch black. We moved away from the dock and a short way down the river we came into a section of the cave with thousands of bright blue glow worms across the ceiling. Our guide moved the boat by pulling us along a rope strung from the walls. Due to recent flooding we could not continue down the river so we sat for a few minutes just marveling at the beauty on display above us. It was then time to climb out of the cave and return to the bus for our 2 1/2 hour drive back to Auckland.

We finished the day with dinner at the Chargrill and headed back to our AirBnB to plan our last day on vacation. Tomorrow night we head home. What a long, strange, wonderful, trip it’s been.

    Travel Day! Sydney -> Auckland

    July 3, 2023 in New Zealand ⋅ 🌬 57 °F

Most of today was spent at the airport or in an airplane! Our flight left at 11 so we got to the airport early and were able to get checked-in and through security fairly easily. This was the busiest airport we had visited and included the longest wait times through security. Once on the plane, despite having babies/small children on both sides of us, the flight went well and we landed in Auckland in no time. But we did lose two more hours due to the timezone. We are now 17 hours ahead of Milwaukee! Crazy!

After a few hiccups getting off the plane and through all of customs (involving a water bottle and some apples) we finally made it out of the airport! It was super windy and raining pretty hard when we met our Uber, but by the time we got to our apartment, it was merely drizzling. We settled into our apartment on the 30th floor (Dad is not a fan of the floor to ceiling windows and open patio, but Maddy, Emily and Mom love the view), and headed out to dinner. We enjoyed a lovely dinner at the Shakespeare bar (Auckland’s oldest pub), despite Maddy’s burger coming without a bun, and then relaxed before heading to bed early to be ready for our Hobbiton pickup at 6:30am tomorrow!

    Blue Mountains and Blowouts

    July 2, 2023 in Australia ⋅ ⛅ 55 °F

Today we took a sunset trip to the Blue Mountains, perhaps the oldest mountains in the world. We took a small tour bus with 8 other people and our guide/driver, Derek. Derek was entertaining and very knowledgeable. He has had many jobs including day trader, ICU nurse, city bus driver, part time college professor, and retiree at 42, and now for fun he does these tours. Later he disclosed he had a PhD in philosophy. We loaded up at 10 AM and headed west.

Our first stop was a little before the mountains called Orchard Hills where we stopped to observe some kangaroos. One was standing by a bush nearby just watching us. We saw four others hop away from us in the field. It was very cool!

Our next stop was in a small mountain town called Glenbrook where we ate some lunch. Then back onto the bus to the Blue Mountain National Park. Our guide led us on an approximately 2 hour hike to Wentworth Falls and back. Along the way there were numerous breathtaking vistas. Fun fact: they are called the Blue Mountains because of the very fine oil the eucalyptus tree leaves give off into the air that reflect blue in the sunlight. One tree had flowers that if you ate them provided energy or after they died were good for starting fires. Ken headed back before the end as the hike involved narrow trails that were very high with sheer drop offs. Amy, Maddy, and Emily went merrily onward oblivious to the obvious danger of which that Ken was all too aware. The hike included an optional hike down to the bottom of the waterfall. It was just beautiful. The downside was that it was an additional 390 steps down and then back up. We made it!

After the falls we headed to the Three Sisters. The Three Sisters are three stone monoliths that aborigines believe are three sisters turned to stone by their medicine man father during battle to protect them (they wanted to marry three brothers from a different tribe which was what started the battle). But the father died in the battle and no one was able to undo the spell. On our way there we heard a weird noise from one of the bus’ rear tires. It didn’t seem to affect driving, so we kept going. While we looked at the Three Sisters our Guide checked out the tire. The outside of the tire looked like it had shredded. We all agreed to drive to the next stop and Derek was going to change the tire while we watched the sunset. The stop for the sunset was called Lincoln’s Rock. Once again Ken saw the obvious danger of being in high places that no one else did, and he went back to attempt to help our guide change the tire. Amy, Maddy and Emily shared some wine and cheese and crackers sitting on some rocks and watched the sunset over the mountains. No one was injured on the rocks including the woman being photographed by about 5 photographers, but there were the remains of two cars that had crashed on the hill. It took awhile after the sunset, but the afterglow was an amazing red. The guide was not able to loosen the lug nuts to change the tire so we were given the choice of driving back to Sydney slowly (80kph) or taking the train. Four of our group opted to take the train back, we stayed with the bus. After we got on the highway, we heard the rear tire blow out but since there were two tires on both sides of the rear axel, it didn’t have much of an impact. Derek got us all back to Sydney safely and we made the tired trek back to our apartment to get ready for New Zealand!

We ended our night packing, and since it is our last night in the land down under Amy, Ken and Maddy all tried vegemite! They were not fans. Our visit in Australia supported Alexander’s theory that no one has bad days in Australia. 😀

    Beaches, Boutiques and Buses

    July 1, 2023 in Australia ⋅ 🌬 64 °F

We started our day by exploring the Rocks Market, just down the street from our AirBnB. It was full of lots of different booths selling food and various art, jewelry, clothes, and other things! We enjoyed a spiral potato on a stick (Mom thinks State Fair should add this food item!) and some pork gyoza dumplings. We had fun wandering and purchased some great souvenirs to take home with us.

Then we headed to Circular Quay where we jumped on a bus and headed out to Bondi Beach! We had fun using public transportation all day to get around! After about 45 minutes we were there. We headed down to the beach and took in the beautiful views. The waves were pretty good and we had fun watching people surf! We then began the coastal walk south along the coast to Tamarama beach and then Brontë Beach. The views were incredible! We grabbed a toastie for lunch and watched some guys playing soccer volleyball. We then took a bus back up to Bondi beach and wandered the shops.

Next we took a bus and a train back towards Sydney to Chinatown! We had a lot of fun wandering and exploring. We found another market! We then enjoyed some cream puffs and a delicious Chinese dinner. We went back to Circular Quay and did a little more souvenir shopping before we went to Lightscapes! It was in the Royal Botanical Gardens, the displays were beautiful. They were all connected to music and had a plant theme.

We headed back to our AirBnB and played some Crew while relaxing. Another great Day in Sydney!!

Manly Beach + the Rocks + the Climb

    June 30, 2023 in Australia ⋅ ☀️ 59 °F

Today was another great day in Sydney! We enjoyed a slow start with bagels and muffins at our AirBnB. Dad was feeling better this morning so we all headed out to our first stop of the day: Manly Beach. To get to Manly beach we headed to Circular Quay to catch the fast ferry to Manly Beach. We made it on the 10:00am ferry and were off! We enjoyed seats right in the bow of the boat and had great views the whole way! The wind was a bit chilly we but we survived.

Once we arrived, we walked down the corso (the main street) and arrived at beautiful Manly Beach! Wow it was stunning! Beautiful blue water and soft sand. We enjoyed exploring the sand and rocks before following a walkway down to Shelly Beach. Afterwards we walked back towards the main street and enjoyed lunch at a cafe along the way. We picked up some delicious massive cookies and jumped on the 1:30 ferry back to Circular Quay!

Next up we did a self guided (really Maddy guided) walking tour of the Rocks! Maddy lead us to 11 different places. The majority were historical with roots leading back to the founding of Sydney. Then it was time to split up. Emily and Maddy headed to climb the Sydney Harbour Bridge, and Mom and Dad went to try and scout it out, and walk part of the bridge.

Mom and Dad enjoyed the museum learning about the building of the bridge, and walked part way along it. Then they headed back to the AirBnB to wait for Emily and Maddy to be finished. Emily and Maddy had a wonderful time climbing the bridge! The sights and views were incredible.

They were given jumpsuits, harnesses, coats, headlamps, and were ready to go! They began the climb over a catwalk, and then climbed 4-5 very steep ladders and were on top of the bridge! From there it was small steps up to the summit. At the summit the whole group sang Happy Birthday to Emily as it is still her birthday week! They stopped for beautiful pictures and views along the way. The city of Sydney is gorgeous! They began the descent and continued to enjoy the wonderful views. They made it down with no problems, and then met Mom and Dad for dinner. We enjoyed some pasta for dinner and are relaxing going to bed soon.

  • Day 20

    All Things Sydney Opera House

    June 29, 2023 in Australia ⋅ ☀️ 59 °F

Today was a fun filled day exploring Sydney and mostly the Sydney Opera House! We enjoyed a slow start to the day, and then headed out to Pancakes on the Rocks for breakfast. We enjoyed delicious pancakes, eggs, and bacon. From there Dad headed back to the AirBnB to rest because he didn’t feel very well, and Maddy, Mom, and Emily headed to the Sydney Eye!

After about a 20 minute walk, we arrived. We moved quickly through the queue and before we knew it we were at the top! It was really neat to be able to lookout over Sydney in every direction. We saw the Opera House, the Harbour Bridge, the airport, the harbor, Allianz Stadium, and so much more. It also helped us get our bearings in the city. We grabbed lunch in the same building before heading to the Opera House.

We had a great guided tour of the Opera House. We learned that it was built over 16 years, and the gentlemen who designed it, Jorn Utzon, actually quit the project before it was finished because of government changes and he was de-funded, and a different architect finished the project. We learned that the outside is made of over 1 million self-cleaning tiles, and that each arch is a part of the same sphere. We got to see inside a couple of theaters and got a mini preview of our show this evening! We also met “Benny the Seal” who lives in the water below and likes to sit in the sun on a ledge just below the walkway!

Next we wandered through the royal botanical gardens. We enjoyed the sunshine and the various plants and trees. We ended at Mrs. Macquerie’s Chair which is a great view point of the Bridge and Opera House for Sunset. We waited for sunset and it was worth it! The views were incredible! We grabbed a quick Uber back to one of Sydney’s oldest pubs on the corner of our Airbnb, Here of Waterloo and met dad for dinner.

After dinner, we headed to Aida - an opera at the Sydney Opera House! We have never been to an opera and now we can say our first opera was at the Sydney Opera house! Pretty cool! It was extremely well done, and we all managed to stay awake and enjoy it even though it was all in Italian!

    Travel Day! Cairns -> Sydney

    June 28, 2023 in Australia ⋅ 🌧 52 °F

Hello Sydney! Today was a travel day from Cairns to Sydney. We were up and ready for our Uber at 7:40, and to the Airport by 7:55! We were able to check in and drop off our luggage with no problem. We cruised through security and grabbed some breakfast while waiting for our flight.

We had to get our carry-on bags weighed (we were a little nervous as we could only have 7 kilos!) but we were all clear. We boarded our plane, and then sat for 1 1/2 hours as some people ended up getting off our flight and they had to find their luggage and get it off the plane. Eventually we were up in the air and headed to Sydney.

We landed in Sydney around 2:00, got our luggage, and called an Uber. We had about a 20 minute drive to our AirBnB. Our AirBnB is right in the heart of “The Rocks” Sydney. This is the original part of Sydney that was founded first. We dropped our bags and headed out to explore! We headed down under the Sydney Bridge and got our first glimpses of the Sydney Opera House!

We wandered for a while looking for a visitor center and ended up asking a very nice police man for directions. He helped us out and we got some brochures with information. We then found a small burger joint for some dinner. Afterwards we headed back through the rain/cold to our AirBnB to plan our next four days in Sydney! We are very excited for the upcoming adventures but it is much colder here than it had been in Bali and Cairns.
