    Day 1 in Brussels, Belgium

    August 31, 2019 in Belgium ⋅ ⛅ 28 °C

So...this city brought back a lot of memories. Brussels was my second ever solo trip when I was new to travelling. I remember my first trip actually got cancelled due to terrorist attacks and I had to rebook it.

So today I hoped on a train to Belgium, after being stuck in England for the last 6 months. My travel bug has been re-ignited! I came here specifically to stock up on beauty products. I tend to use French products because they work better with my skin. They are more natural in comparison to the crap that we have in England.

So after beauty shopping, I did some sightseeing. I saw most of the sights that I have seen before...the peeing statues, Atomium, Grote Markt. I also ate a waffle and some frites. Funnily enough they didnt taste as good as the ones that I had on my last trip to Belgium. I suspect this is because I got them from the central touristy area. On my last trip, I didnt eat in the central area.

The beer is still good as always. I bought a few to take home, but I think I might buy some more tomorrow if the supermarket is open in the morning.

Overall...Brussels is not one of my favourite cities in Europe. It never has been. But i'm glad that I have seen it twice in different seasons. My first trip was in the winter and this one is in summer. It's a completely different atmosphere. I definitely preferred the winter. It was less crowded so I got to actually observe/ learn about the locals and their culture.

Anyway...it's 11.27pm and time to sleep.

    Au revoir

    Bristol, England

    May 26, 2019 in England ⋅ ⛅ 16 °C

So I haven't been able to go anywhere for the last 5 months. It's Bank Holiday weekend for us in England, so I decided to book a day trip to Bristol. I haven't travelled around the country much (ridiculous right?). But I realised that there are actually really cheap coach tickets available for trips outside of London. This ticket cost me £16 for a return fare...and I booked it just a week in advance.

Anyway...It took 3 hours and I arrived at 11am on a grey rainy day. This is typical UK weather so I am used to it. I wandered around for a while and then went to a famous pie restaurant called "Pieminister". It's very popular and began to get busy within 30 minutes of opening.

Then I wandered around Bristol Harbour and found a free museum that talks about the history of Bristol. It was interesting to learn that a lot Scandinavian people were brought to Bristol as slaves from Iceland.

The weather made it difficult for me to follow my plan. When it started raining heavily I had to seek shelter until it stopped. I did a 30 minute hike up some very steep roads to reach Clifton Suspension Bridge. It was definitely worth it to see that view. It reminded me a lot of Luxembourg.

I really enjoyed my day trip to Bristol...and i'm definitely considering some more "domestic tourism" trips whenever i'm on a budget.

    Ciao for now.

    Day 2 in Gdańsk, Poland

    January 20, 2019 in Poland ⋅ ⛅ 0 °C

My flight was at 2.30pm and I had to leave for the airport at 12. So I only had a couple of hours in the morning to explore. I got up very early and went to Ułica Dluga (long market). It was interesting to see that they still had Christmas trees up in January. I also saw a few locals still wearing Christmas jumpers.

I found a really big souvenir shop and ended up buying some souvenirs. Then I went to get breakfast. I had sausages with bread, which tasted really good. I also ordered a liquor coffee...which was pretty much just liquor. It was so strong! It was like pure liquor topped with cream.

My time was up after eating and I had to rush to thr busstop. I can't wait for my 3rd trip to Poland. Warsaw is next on my list.

    Day 1 in Gdańsk, Poland

    January 19, 2019 in Poland ⋅ ⛅ 0 °C

I landed in Gdańsk at around 12pm and went to get a local bus. Whilst waiting at the bus stop a Polish girl approached me and started talking to me. She asked where I was from and gave me some advice for expling Gdańsk. She also gave me the heads up that today was the mayors' funeral (he was stabbed to death a week ago). I was surprised at how friendly she was because slavic people are not the most warm.

It was too early to check in when I reached the city centre at 1pm. So I left my suitcase and decided to go and find lunch. I went to a small local café and ate some meat pierogi. The café was run by old people who didn't speak much English but they tried their best to communicate with me.

By the time I was finished it was time to check in. So I put my luggage down and went out again to explore. I wandered around the water and then went to eat some Żurek (rye soup with egg and sausage). After this I went to the world war 2 museum.

This was the best museum I have ever visited in my life. Nothing is sugar coated...they go in to so much detail. It is also very sad and I had to walk away from some displays. Hearing about what the Germans and Russians did to Poland was too much.

    Day 2 in Vienna, Austria

    December 21, 2018 in Austria ⋅ 🌫 -1 °C

There is definitely an issue with race in Austria. I don't want to spend paragraphs talking about what happened. However, I will definitely make a blog post about it. But for now I will share what I did today.

I started the day with a visit to the Naschmarkt which is an extremely long market. Then I went to wander around the schonbrunn palace gardens. It was too cold so I sat in the cafe and had a "wiener melange" (traditional Viennese coffee). To be honest...it was nothing special. It tasted like a latte and it definitely wasn't strong.

It didn't feel as if I did much today but I must have because my feet are hurting so bad. After the coffee I watched a strudel making demonstration...and then went to the natural history museum. It's the best one that I have ever seen.

For dinner I tried schnitzel. It looks massive but it's actuallly very light. When I saw it my first thought was "how am I going to eat this?". I did struggle but that is probably because I ate early...and ate a lot during the day in general.

    Day 1 in Vienna, Austria

    December 20, 2018 in Austria ⋅ ❄️ -2 °C

It's my first day in Vienna and it's freezing cold. There is leftover snow on the floor, and my face actually turned red. I am black so it takes extreme weather for me to go red. I checked into the hotel and then went to explore a church. After this I went to the Christmas market on Rathausplatz. Over here I tried some Christmas punsch which was VERY strong. I had 2 and literally felt my head spinning. So I took the tram andheaded off to "knoedel manufaktur" which is a dumpling shop. I tried the knoedel with pork and sauerkraut. It was nice...but not as nice as Polish pierogi.

People in Vienna are not very friendly. It's a shame because the city seems beautiful. I cannot tell whether it is just the way they are...or whether there are some other "factors" that are triggering their behaviour. I need another day before making a judgement.

    Day 2 in Milan, Italy

    November 17, 2018 in Italy ⋅ ⛅ 10 °C

Today we ended up doing a lot of shopping instead of sightseeing. The quality of clothing is so much better than back in England. We could feel difference when trying clothes on. So I went over budget and bought some clothes. But it's worth it because they will last long. After this we went to an Italian lunch buffet. Free coffee was included so we got free espresso's. We also got a glass of red wine for €3...because why not right?

After this we did a little bit more shopping and then headed to the Duomo cathedral. We got a ticket for the rooftops which were beautiful. I have never seen anything like this before. I think that we came at the best time of year because the lights in Milan bring a lot of life to the buildings. It really does look breath taking sometimes.

Anyway, we finished our day with a trip to the Navigli canal area. It is full of restaurants and bars. We had dinner at a pizzeria, where we split our pizza in half. Then we had some drinks (limoncello and aperol spritz).

We got very drunk...again, and ended up getting one of the last trains back to the hotel. I honestly feel like I will come back to Milan just to do some shopping. I want my whole wardrobe to be Italian.

    Day 1 in Milan, Italy

    November 16, 2018 in Italy ⋅ ⛅ 12 °C

Today was our first day in Milan. I am joined by Maria on this trip, and I suppose that it's a girly weekend. We got a bus from Bergamo airport to the city centre. Then we checked into our hotel which is in a good location. After this, we headed out to explore around Sforza Castle. The sun was setting and they had orange lights to brighten up the castle. We found a park area at the back exit of the castle, and went to sit down and talk. This is one of the things I usually miss out on when travelling solo. Travelling usually makes you think about things that you normally wouldn't . So when you travel solo there is nobody to share your thoughts with.

After unwinding on the park bench, we went back out in search of something to eat. We ended up getting a glass of red wine in a restaurant. Maria wanted to eat there but I didnt. The menu didnt have anything that I wanted...or any of the best Italian dishes. It was more like "roast potatoes with chicken" and "cheesey gnocchi". I can make those at home in England. When I travel I like to try things that are not easily cooked. So we left and found somewhere else to have a meal.

We agreed on a cheap traditional restaurant around the corner from our hotel. I ordered a seafood pasta with mussels, and she ordered spaghetti bologese. The food was absolutely delicious!. We ordered another glass of wine and then went back to the hotel. wine in Italy is VERY strong. The 2 glasses we had today were enough to send us into a deep sleep.

    Day 2 in Riga, Latvia

    October 24, 2018 in Latvia ⋅ 🌬 6 °C

It still rained all day today. I started my day with a trip to Riga central market. I bought some fresh cranberry juice, lingonberry juice, ryebread, and lots of bee products. Then I went back to the hostel for a little break. It was too cold and my hands were numb, plus I needed to drop off the things that I bought.

The German siblings were at the hostel and they offered me coffee. So we sat down for an hour and had some conversations about travelling. We also talked the differences between Germany and England.

After finishing the coffee break I headed back out to explore. I bought some more amber (a necklace and ring), then had a late lunch. This time I had cabbage soup and a local beer. I like how cosy all of the restaurants in Riga seem to be. You really do feel like you are in your Grandmothers living room. The fact that the locals are warm makes it even more cosy.

I wandered around for a while and then had to go back to the hostel for my suitcase. My journey to the airport was pleasant. I will definitely remember Riga...because the driver blew me a kiss when I stepped off the bus at the airport. Haha!

    Day 1 in Riga, Latvia

    October 23, 2018 in Latvia ⋅ 🌬 6 °C

My first day in Riga seems to be going well...apart from the weather. There is so much rain and it literally hasn't stopped. I checked into my hostel and they gave me 2 shots of Black Balsam (the national drink). This hostel is really good because it has a privacy curtain. There are 2 German siblings in my room who are both very friendly. They were giving me reccomendations on where to explore and what to eat/drink.

So I went out to explore around the old town. Riga is very quiet which is something that I an happy about. It's so peaceful and the locals are friendly which makes it even better. Even if they don't speak English they will try to communicate with you using hand gestures.

For dinner I had grey peas with bacon which was supposed to be a starter. It filled me up! I also ordered traditional potato pancakes as a starter. The grey peas were delicious but I wasn't too keen on the potato pancakes. They were quite greasy and very crispy. I had "kvass" to drink which is a drink made from rye bread. It tastes a lot better than you would think.
