    Chiang Mai - Day 1

    25 de noviembre de 2023, Tailandia ⋅ ☀️ 86 °F

After 17 hours in the air I finally arrived in Thailand at 11 in the morning. I made it to my hostel and discover I happened to be in Chiang Mai for the lantern festival. (Like the one in tangled) Luckily I don’t plan a single thing in advance and decided to extended my stay for an additional night to see more of the festival. I then set off on my agenda for the day. Don’t fall asleep. This basically consisted of me walking the entire city of Chaing Mai and consuming many tai teas and coffees and observing the start of the festival:) I stumbled upon many temples and through various markets! After many hours of meandering and about 20,000 steps later granted myself sleep at 9!Leer más

    Cali, Columbia

    15 de julio de 2023, Colombia ⋅ ☁️ 84 °F

    Hola penguins!!

Our time in Cali was primarily filled with parties and meeting up with Audrey’s friends from school. The first day we visited her university, old apartment, and prison gym. Afterwards we came back to our hostel took salsa lessons, walked to a river where the streets were COMPLETELY full with people dancing, singing and drinking, and then proceeded to get an another party bus with our new hostel friends. An hour of unlimited alcohol and two stripper poles later, we found ourselves at a club. We once again danced out hearts out and went home in pouring rain. The next day we walked through streets of cali, visited a church, sat in a park, drank some juice, saw some cat statues, and then met up with friends of Audrey’s. After catching up we headed to a gigantic night club and danced (notice a theme). The next day we went to another friend of Audrey’s house, ate lunch, and then visited another friend and her baby. Tired from a few nights out we chilled at the hostel for the remainder of them day.Leer más

    Hola penguins!!

On this episode of nic and aud climbing large objects for a vista, we went to Guatupe. We hopped on a bus for two hours that took us to a very large rock right outside of Guatupe. 700 steps later we ended up at the top with an amazing vista of the Columbian waterways. After we stopped sweating, we took some pics and headed back down to make our way to the actual town. Once we got to the town we were greeted with color. Every door, wall, and window is painted with extravagant colors. The entire town is vibrant. We walked around, took some pictures, ate dinner, and then headed back to Medellin just in time to hop on our 8 hour night bus to Cali.Leer más

    Medellin ~ Day 2

    12 de julio de 2023, Colombia ⋅ ☁️ 82 °F

    Hola penguins!!

Our second day in Medellin we headed to the town center, where there are 23 sculptures by Fernando Botero. We took some pictures and then set off to find a market. The market where we ended up was by far the largest market I have ever seen. This market made every other I have been to look like a corner store. We meandered through the market for about an hour and then headed to a small replica town of an old Pueblo. Later in the evening we met up with Josè and headed to a Columbian fútbol game. The game was absolutely incredible. The fans quite literally on their feet, singing, and chanting the entire game!! (Makes a sounders game look incredibly lame). After the game Josè took us to try some Venezuelan food where we unfortunately had to say goodbye and headed back to our hostel.Leer más

    Medellin ~ Day 1

    11 de julio de 2023, Colombia ⋅ ☁️ 82 °F

    Hola penguins

Today was a PACKED day. We started by eating my favorite item of food we have had thus far. It was an arepa (flattened cornbread tortilla?) sliced in half with scrambled egg stuffed inside. After demolishing breakfast we took the metro to Casa de la Memoria a museum (yes a museum) offering different perspectives on the Columbian drug wars and armed conflicts. We then headed to find a new SIM card for Audrey’s new phone which turned out to be a surprisingly difficult experience. Thankfully the girl helping us was incredibly patient!! With two working phones we set off to see Comuna 13. A neighborhood previously largely affected by drug wars now converted to a lively environment with giant murals, street performers, and flavorful food. Comuna 13 is perched on a hill and has escalators weaving through the neighborhood in order to help assist the climb and navigate the extensive street art. After meandering through the streets we headed down to ride one of the most extensive and impressive cable cars I have ever been on. The cable cars are part of the metro system and when we got on at 4:30 they were clearly being used more as commute transportation, rather than the tourist attraction aud and I were on it for. The cable car had 4 stops and round trip about 30 minutes. Once we took the full trip on the cable car we proceeded to meet up with one of Audrey’s friends, José. We sat down had a few beers and then went to find a discoteca. After walking through STREETS of discoteca’s we ironically found a lively one called Gringo Tuesday’s (it was a Tuesday). Once again we danced our hearts out, had no stollen phones, and called it a night.Leer más

    Quito ~ Day 4

    10 de julio de 2023, Ecuador ⋅ ☁️ 64 °F

    Hola penguins!!

Today we woke up, had breakfast and went to the botanical gardens. The botanical gardens in Quito is the largest I have even been to and by far the most beautiful, full of hundreds (may be an exaggeration) of different species of orchids. After we meandered through the gardens we ventured to find another market. However the market we stumbled in was much more operational than a tourist attraction. Outside of the market we grabbed $1 dollar sandwiches for lunch and dinner, and headed to the airport towards Medellin. When we got to Medellin, we were absolutely exhausted and headed straight to our hostel. To my surprise our hostel was in one of the trendiest neighborhoods in Medellin. It’s like a Columbian Scottsdale!!Leer más

    Quito ~ Day 3

    9 de julio de 2023, Ecuador ⋅ ⛅ 63 °F

    Hola Penguins!

You learn quickly when your traveling that nice people always show up when you’re down on your luck. A girl from the hostel allowed to to borrow her phone for 45 minutes while I talked to my parents and tried to obtain my email password (turns out having your passwords written down on your notes app isn’t incredibly helpful when your phone is gone). Once we emerged from the room, the hostel reception staff had already gotten word that I had lost my phone an a phone had been found at the bar. You also learn while traveling how to problem solve. Audrey and I were both phoneless and we’re going to need a burner. So Audrey is now the proud owner of a SEXY android. While waiting for the bar to open to see if my phone was there, we distracted ourselves by going to the Mitad del Mundo (the center of the world). We went to the memorial (which is in fact is actually about 400m from the true center of the world) and then to a small but very interesting museum. We learned about some indigenous communities of Ecuador and the effects that the northern and southern hemisphere have on balance and gravity. When we got back from the equator we received a picture of the phone found at the bar…AND IT WAS MINE. On the high on this news, we got ourselves a taxi, and showed up at Monica’s house to make chocolate. We started by roasting Ecuadorian cocoa beans, cracking them, grinding them, added a few other ingredients, boiling the mixture it until it became a paste, and then proceeded to try the chocolate we had made from start to finish. We tried to chocolate plain and with various different flavors including cinnamon, ginger, chili, rose, salted caramel, and coffee. Nothing like a little chocolate for dinner. After that amazing experience we headed to collect my phone. By the grace of God we completed a rescue mission of my phone and for this I am able to continue to update y’all :) we went from 0 to 2 phones in one day, some might call that a success.

p.s. there are basically no photos from the day cause there was no phone :(

    Quito ~ Day 2

    8 de julio de 2023, Ecuador ⋅ ☁️ 64 °F

    Hola penguins!

We woke up early with one less phone and put ourselves on a bus to Cotopaxi, the second tallest active volcano in the world. While we tried to sleep on the bus, our monotoned tour guide proceeded to talk the entire way while giving us no useful facts about Cotopaxi or what we were getting ourselves into. Turns out we were wildly unprepared for the hike. The moment we got off the bus at Cotopaxi we were pelted with wind, rain, and sleet. Aud and I both questioned why we had paid to do this. However, not willing to say we didn’t get to the top, we put our heads down and miserably walked (I might have kinda run) up countless switchbacks until we got to base camp. At base camp we talked to others who were also a little surprised that THIS was Cotopaxi. Apparently some days it’s beautiful? Unfortunately, we were not granted one of those days. After regaining the feeling in my fingers, we headed back down. Once back at the bus, we proceeded to get on bikes ride to a lagoon. While slightly more enjoyable than the hike, it was a questionable experience. Once we got back on the bus, we drove to lunch, fed some llamas, and headed back to Quito. After a quick nap and little bit of shared TikTok time we went up to the hostel bar to prepare for the party bus we had signed up for. At 11 we got on the party bus. (Think less like a party bus and more like the Seattle Ride the Duck situation, with no seats, free unlimited alcohol, and stripper poles). After and hour on the bus riding around Quito, we arrived at the bar were once again we danced our hearts out. However… once again the night came to an abrupt end when I realized my phone was gone. Down two phones in two days.Leer más

    Quito ~ Day 1

    7 de julio de 2023, Ecuador ⋅ ☁️ 63 °F

    Hola penguins!

On our way to Quito, we learned it pays to talk to strangers as we befriended a man named Josh who got us into the ~fancy~ airport lounge. We looked a little out of place with all three of us carrying massive backpacks amongst everyone in suits. We ate 5 helpings of dinner from the free buffet and headed to Quito with one our first full meals in a while under our belts. Our first day in Quito we did a walking tour, chocolate tasting, and went to a market to get $1 fresh juices (we learned from Cusco and did not eat actual food). In the evening we tried hanging out at our hostel to make friends and we’re slightly unsuccessful. Not ready to give up on the night we decided to grab a drink outside the hostel. About 300 ft from our hostel we stumbled upon an Italian restaurant owned by a Colombian man. He conned us into his restaurant where we proceeded to drink a few glasses of wine. After a few glasses of wine, our new Colombian friend agreed to show us the local bar scene. 7 minutes later he had a suit on and we were in a taxi, on our way to the discoteca district. Turns out our friend used to be a manger at one of the clubs and knew every single person on the street. We absolutely danced our hearts out. However the night came to an abrupt end when we got into the taxi home and Audrey realized her phone was gone. In a matter of minutes, while standing outside the bar waiting for the taxi, we were one phone down :(Leer más

    Montañita, Ecuador

6 de julio de 2023, Ecuador

    Hola penguins!!

I am currently leaving Montanita, Ecuador with many more sunburns and bug bites that I started with and much less sleep :) I am to tired to separate our days in Montanita so here is a brief recap. We started our first day with a surfing lessons, which led to relaxing on the beach with our surf instructors, which then led to a few drinks and lot of pool. Turns out I suck at both surfing and pool, but am significantly worse at pool. The next day we went to Isla de la Plata, which is also known as the poor man Galapagos. On our way to and from the island we saw SO MANY WHALES!! On the island we also saw blue footed boobies, snakes, lizards, sea turtles, coral reefs, and countless fish. We then grabbed drinks with all of our new local and hostel friends and danced all night. I think it’s safe to say we know everyone is this little beach town :) we had a slow last day in Montanita and planned the rest of our trip (yes we occasionally plan what we’re gonna do) and then hopped on a bus en route to our next destination!!Leer más
