    Coffee tour

    October 23, 2023 in Colombia ⋅ ☁️ 21 °C

    📍El Ocaso, Salento, Colombia

Coffee lovers eat your heart out. Went on a wee tour this morning learning all about the different types of coffee beans and processes in Colombia and worldwide. Like real-life wild Thornberrys, we got to explore to hunt for ripe beans and pick our own. Did you know the smell from dried coffee is called 'fragrance' and from wet coffee it's called 'aroma'? Yep, cool fun fact, and I think it means our transition to coffee snobs is officially complete.Read more

    Valle del Cococa, Salento

    October 22, 2023 in Colombia ⋅ ☁️ 19 °C

    📍Valle del Cocora, Salento, Colombia

*Ticks seeing tall palm trees off the bucket list*

We put Salento on our travel map so we could visit this palm tree valley, and now we're finally here! If you'd asked me before I came where I was most excited to visit, I would have said this place. And we did love our hike to get here, but I found walking at altitude again pretty hard and the 22 degrees pretty cold after the heat of the coast. Yes, woe betide the travellers. But really, still a fab day and Salento itself is a pretty wee colonial town famous for coffee nationally, with loads of lush greenery surrounding it. In fact, we're going on a coffee tour tomorrow just to cement our status as Edinburgh coffee snobs when we get back. OH, and we thiiink those are the famous Andean condors flying around above us which is a real highlight!Read more

    Tayrona National Park

    October 16, 2023 in Colombia ⋅ ☁️ 28 °C

    📍Tayrona National Park, Colombia

The goggles were well and truly out for this beautiful beach in Tayrona National Park, as was the cracking tans we've been working on.... 🙃

We swithered about coming here at all and started to get confused about where was best to go to make the most of our time in the country. But in the end, we got FOMO about missing Colombia's biggest tourist attraction and booked in. It's home to indigenous people who live in the park, and we visited on the second last day of the season before they close for a few weeks to protect the environment so we were lucky with our timing. Overall, we enjoyed our visit, but it was an extremely sweaty walk in the humidity to get there, so we were knackered by the end. It was also my second time ever swimming in the Carribean Sea, which is literally like having a warm bath - bliss. I'd say worth the trip just for this!Read more

    Cartagena

    October 14, 2023 in Colombia ⋅ ☁️ 28 °C

    📍Cartagena, Colombia

"Hot, humid, and happening." Señor Watt's description of Cartagena, and he's not wrong! We're well and truly into the tropics now, and the heat hit us like a wall off the plane. After saying for weeks that I love hot weather, I lost my battle to the humidity and fell asleep for 3 hours in the room this afternoon. Rookie error.

When not napping, we've been exploring the town and all its colourful streets. There's music and aircon pumping out everywhere, street vendors on every corner (we risked it for a biscuit with a few market juices today, yum) and a real Carribean feel around, which feels so different to the rest of South America. It's the kind of place that makes you want to stay out a bit later and push the 6pm curfew we seem to have self-imposed when travelling. It's everything I hoped it would be and more after wanting to come here for so long!

We've got one more day here to wander round, then we're going up to Tayrona National Park to dust off the swimming cossie.

    Huacachina

    October 12, 2023 in Peru ⋅ ☁️ 21 °C

    📍Huacachina, Peru

Oh. My. God. One of the most exhilarating and terrifying experiences of my life. Dune buggying was absolutely off-the-scale mental. We whipped up and down the humongous sand formations on the whim of our driver Ramiros, feeling like we would tip at any minute, and then the next, we were literally flying off the ground. We had real-life tears in the front of the buggy from someone who was so scared... I was involuntarily screaming my head off, and then Adam, who is clearly now an adrenaline junkie, just laughed 😅 To top it all off, we had an amazing sunset, which I loved, although I did need an hour on the bus back just to sit so I didn't feel like I was going to be sick. But it was seriously incredible stuff and one of our fave things so far!

Huacachina is a little oasis in the desert about 5 hours from Lima which is known for its dunes and partying (not for us though, we've aged 10 years and have a strict 9pm bedtime now). We only stayed one night, thinking it might be gimmicky, but that's all it took for it to blow our heads off. Well worth the stop!

We've finished with our bus company Peru Hop now, and we have today to explore the capital before we head to Colombia tomorrow. We've been ravaged by sand flies, and we're entering mosquito haven soon again, so wish us luck!

    Exploring Arequipa

    October 7, 2023 in Peru ⋅ ☀️ 21 °C

    📍Arequipa, Peru

"We'll just have a few chill days in Arequipa" = straight into grade 3 white water rafting. My alter ego Kristen had a great time taking on the high jumps of Chili River screaming blue murder, whilst Adventure Adam jumped twice, barely saying a word.

But really, we've loved Arequipa so far. It's SO beautiful with incredible volcano scenery at every corner, and we think it's our favourite city we've been to on the trip. It feels more chilled than Cusco, and a bit more authentic. It also helps that we treated ourselves to a hotel with a garden so we can read our books, or in Adam's case, stream the rugby... One more week in Peru, and then it's on to Central America, which I CAN'T WAIT for!

    Rainbow mountain

    October 5, 2023 in Peru ⋅ ☀️ 18 °C

    📍Rainbow Mountain, Peru

Certified mountain goats... at 5036 metres above sea level, this 'easy' walk was pretty hard. We heard a description that being at that level of altitude is like breathing through a straw, and honestly, that's what it feels like! But what beautiful views! We tacked on another trek at the end to the red valley, which was peaceful and remote, and only opened a month ago as normally it's too icy. A great wee add-on.

Think we also reached peak tourist status on our day out, as we paid for a pic with our new llama pals, and then when we bumped into *another* local festival, we got asked to dance with the locals and have pictures taken. I can only assume it's because we look like the biggest gringos going. Saying that, it was such a lovely moment, and we're yet to meet a local who hasnt been friendly to us on our trip. So, I was busy giving out hugs at the end to all my new friends 🤗

    Exploring Cusco

    October 3, 2023 in Peru ⋅ ☁️ 19 °C

    📍 Cusco, Peru

Cusco is our longest stop so far at 5 nights total - Adam's intense itinerary stops for no-one. With all this time on our hands, we've done a walking tour to learn about this beautiful Unesco World Heritage city, wandered around the cute San Blas neighbourhood, and then today we ramped it up and went on a quadbiking adventure to the nearby Maras salt mines. It was a great opportunity for me to work on my monobrow, and I'll probably rebrand as an adventure traveller any day now...

We've actually extended our stay here by a night so we can do Rainbow Mountain tomorrow (one of Peru's most famous places). It says the walk is 'easy'. Watch this space.

    Machu Picchu

    October 1, 2023 in Peru ⋅ ☁️ 11 °C

    📍Machu Picchu, Peru

Woweeeee, that's one of the seven wonders of the world ticked off the old bucket list! Hiking in along the Inca trail was such a (sweaty) experience which gave us incredible views and time to appreciate the history and scale of the mountains. Just the one day trek though thankfully, the full trail sounded insane. And then we hit the town and coincided with ANOTHER local festival where, this time, they paraded the local delicacies of cooked guinea pigs and cheese in giant 3D structures through the streets.

For us, Peru is where it all started. We were about three days away from going on a trip here in March 2020 before the pandemic hit, and then everything changed. An emotional full circle moment to be here together three and a half years later, and to be lucky enough to make it into a full-blown four month adventure.

    La Paz

    September 27, 2023 in Bolivia ⋅ ☀️ 14 °C

    📍 La Paz, Bolivia

Lots of travellers skip La Paz as it's got a dangerous reputation, and Ads did require a bit of convincing, but we settled for a two night stay here. Total culture shock at first - it's brimming with people wearing incredible traditional outfits, the traffic is literally out of control, and you could quickly see on the streets that Bolivia is South America's second poorest country - but it really grew on us and by the end we really liked the colourful chaos and we felt safe.

It's hard to show the immense scale of La Paz. It just seems to stretch on forever, pushing itself into the mountain slopes. We used the cable cars like a fairground ride to explore whilst the locals were commuting to and from work (work, what's work🙃?!) We also managed to squeeze in a walking tour, a museum of folkore visit and a walk through the witches market where it was in fact, not cuddly toy stuffed baby llamas, but real-life dead baby llamas used as offerings to Pachamama (the Inca goddess of mother earth). Fascinating and horrifying.
