  • Day 33

    Seville

    January 10, 2023 in Spain ⋅ ☀️ 63 °F

Our last stop in Spain led us to Seville for 3 days. Seville was our favorite city in Spain. During our visit we had multiple stops that that we absolutely loved, such as Royal Alcázar of Seville and Plaza de España which both of them had beautiful gardens. In Royal Alcàzar we saw many beautiful muslin inspired designs in every room we went to. From floor to ceiling every inch was covered with carvings. The Royal gardens was a whole world to itself. The lush gardens took hours to walk through. The Seville cathedral is one of the largest in the world. The altar was so detailed that our iPhone cameras couldn’t even render it properly. Inside was also the tomb of Christopher Columbus. Overall it was also really nice to have some sun and warm weather for a change.Read more

  • Day 28

    Madrid

    January 5, 2023 in Spain ⋅ ☀️ 54 °F

Our next stop in our adventure took us to Madrid. One of our favorite places to see while we visited was the Royal Palace of Madrid. We were able to see a decent size of the palace which was full of beautifully decorated rooms with gorgeous furniture and stunning art. While we were on the tour we were able to see the Palace Armory which was really neat to explore and see all of the armor and weapons that fighters used throughout time. Another cool site that we visited was the Temple of Debod. This ancient Egyptian temple was dismantled in Egypt and rebuilt in the center of Madrid in 1970.Read more

  • Day 22

    Barcelona

    December 30, 2022 in Spain ⋅ ⛅ 64 °F

During our stay in Barcelona we sadly ended up getting sick and we did not get too explore as much as we would have liked. Even though we were not feeling well, we still tried to see some of the beauty that Barcelona had for us. We spent our New Years Eve in Plaza de España, the fireworks were incredible and they even did a show with drones. Jake really enjoyed the show but for Julie it was torturous night since it was when her sickness hit. On our first day of 2023, Julie was reunited with her biological brother. They were both separated when they were children and this was dream come true for her. Even though we did not get to see very much on this trip we plan on returning since there is now family here in Spain that we will come visit.Read more

  • Day 20

    Jungfraujoch - Top of Europe

    December 28, 2022 in Switzerland ⋅ ☀️ 21 °F

Today we visited Jungfraujoch also advertised as “Top of Europe”. The interesting thing is that Jungfraujoch is not even close to being the highest point in Europe. Coming in at just under 13,000 feet it was still quite a journey.

We started the day by taking a bus to the main terminal in Grindelwald. From there we took a 15 minute high speed gondola to a train station in the mountains. The gondola was a new addition in recent years and replaced the 45 minute train ride that used to be required. At first, Julie was sitting backwards as we flew up through the mountains but quickly she got queasy.

After arriving in the gondola station, we needed to transfer to a cogwheel train to take us the remaining 30 minutes up to the summit. This cog wheel runs to the highest train station in Europe. It was a technological wonder when it was built in the late 1800s. At that time the train ride was coined as a ride to the top of Europe. Thus the name today.

Once at the top, we were treated with breathtaking views of the Swiss Alps … literally breathtaking. We both had our time breathing with the altitude. In addition, we visited a museum about the building of the train line and an ice palace. Inside the ice palace was beautiful sculptures that last year round. We both had a blast sliding around on the ice floors.

While the experience was beautiful, we both agree that overall it seemed to be a little bit of a tourist trap. Some of the views we have seen throughout the trip for free have matched this expensive experience.

As a side, not related to this experience, we have found that the Swiss food is bland and way overpriced. We are looking forward to some Spanish food in Barcelona.

    First Mountain

    December 27, 2022 in Switzerland ⋅ ⛅ 28 °F

Today we took another adventure to the top of First Mountain in Switzerland. The day began with a 25 minute gondola from where we were staying in Grindelwald to the top of the mountain. It was amazing to watch the scenery change from a sunny day with no snow to a hazy peak with snow everywhere.

Over the course of the next hour the sun did it’s job and slowly broke through the snowy mist to reveal the snow covered peaks surrounding us. While up there we did a cliff walk on a boardwalk that wrapped around the side of a cliff and Julie did a zip line/flyer hybrid. She was strapped into a harness face down in the Superman position. It then accelerated up the mountain backwards at over 45 mph before flying back down at over 60mph!

After a scenic 25 min ride back down we were greeted by another amazing sunset in town.

  • Day 18

    Liechtenstein

    December 26, 2022 in Liechtenstein ⋅ ⛅ 48 °F

During our road trip today we stopped in one of the worlds smallest counties: Liechtenstein! We did a quick 30 minute hike to an overlook where we could see the entire country in the valley. Through the middle of the valley runs a river. On the far side is Switzerland on the near side is Liechtenstein.

We also made a quick stop at a local McDonald’s since everything was closed to celebrate Saint Steven’s Day. It was interesting to see an entire country as a ghost town. The food at McDonald’s was so much better than in the US but cost much more.

Overall it took about 20 minutes to drive from one side of the country to the other.

  • Day 17

    Highline179

    December 25, 2022 in Austria ⋅ ☀️ 45 °F

While driving to sledging we saw a beautiful bridge crossing across the highway. On Christmas we decided to go back and visit and wow was it breathtaking. After a tram ride to the top we crossed the bridge. Julie had a blast. Jake pretended to not look scared of the moving bridge. It wasn’t very convincing.Read more

    Merry Christmas

    December 25, 2022 in Germany ⋅ ⛅ 46 °F

What is Christmas without matching pajamas and a beautiful hike around a glacier lake. What an amazing day!

  • Day 16

    Zugspitze

    December 24, 2022 in Germany ⋅ ❄️ 30 °F

Snow! You would think at the end of December in the Bavarian Alps this wouldn’t be such an exciting thing. But it was! Unfortunately when we arrived in Fussën, the area had a heat wave and all of the snow melted. This messed up our plan to do the longest sledding run in Germany. So as an alternative to our original plan we went to Zugspitze which is the highest mountain in Germany.

Zugspitze is over 9,000 feet tall and when it’s a nice day you can view Italy, France, Austria, and Switzerland. But not today. The snow was falling very heavily which led to almost white out conditions. Which was so much fun!

While up there we were able to do some sledging with both a traditional sled and a fast sledge. It was a lot of fun but on one run Jake got stuck in 4 feet of fresh powder and had to roll down the whole hill in order to escape.

We also ran into this really amazing Igloo Hotel made completely out of ice. It was so cool!
