    Vietnam! 🇻🇳

    May 6 in Vietnam ⋅ ☁️ 27 °C

    Highlights of Vietnam:

    1. Deep water solo rock climbing at Cat Ba Island. A crazy experience climbing with no equipment and just jumping off the cliff into the water. I've wanted to try it for ages and very proud of myself for doing it, I was so scared!

    2. Ha Giang Loop 3-day motorbike tour of the north. Beautiful scenery and I even tried driving the motorbike for a section of the journey which was also a very crazy experience to me. We were living life on the edge (literally driving on the edge of a mountain). Lots of fun and met some crazy vietnamese people at dinner time where they drank shots of 'happy water' every night.

    3. Exploring Hanoi. Hustle and bustle busy city but with a lot of charm and loads of backpackers. Feels like a true backpacker experience whereas Indonesia was a bit more of a luxury backpacker experience. I really liked the change of pace but not sure my nervous system would enjoy much more of it.

Chris is sick at the moment so we are just chilling in a nice homestay in the countryside. I'm taking good care of him and he has a gorgeous view of the mountains from his bed. Only 2 days left in Vietnam but we already ticked off the must-do's so I'm happy to have a chill couple of days :)

  • Day 70

    Bali, Indonesia

    April 15 in Indonesia ⋅ ☀️ 32 °C

Back in Bali! Been nice showing the boyo around.

The night we arrived we booked a tour for the following "morning". We did a hike up mount Batur and had to wake up at 2am to go and make it for the sunrise. Crazy kids! We didn't even see the sunrise because it was so cloudy but it was quite a funny experience anyway. We were all making jokes about it, and we did get a bit of a view on the way back down the mountain. This hike wasn't too hard but stay tuned for our experience in Lombok...

We took a scooter and drove around the gorgeous green rice fields and saw some waterfalls. We also each took a few yoga classes and went to a fancy gym and had smoothie bowls so we were on a bit of a health kick here!

We ended up seeing some traditional Balinese dancers perform a dance at a hostel which was very unique and even a bit spooky. The music was a bit eerie and they really widen their eyes and use a lot of facial expressions/ eye movements and they flex their double jointed fingers and wave them around in the air. Apparently this dancing was a ritual used to ward off evil spirits and bad omens way before Hinduism came to the island. Balinese people also create very small baskets made out of leaves with flowers and rice inside (and sometimes a bit of pancake) as an offering to the Hindu gods so they will be protected from harm. They also light incense and place it on top so the streets of Bali smell lovely and look very colourful. Taxi drivers even put an offering on their dashboard to protect them on the roads. I think it's a lovely tradition and it must make them feel very safe.

We were supposed to get a free massage each at our hostel but we were late getting home from the gym so I missed mine, and I got caught in a downpour during my scooter ride home. I smashed my head into a big tree while running to get shelter and had to have a lie down whilst chris started his massage and prayed I didn't have concussion but I was all good.

We also went to a coffee plantation and tried 16 different teas and coffees for only £2.50 each! We learned about all the health benefits and the traditional method of making the coffee beans which they still use today. We bought 1 bag of our favourite tea (mangosteen) and coffee (vanilla) to bring home.

One of the photos here was taken at the Yoga Barn and you can see the yogis doing acro yoga which is a bit like doing gymnastics with a partner. It was entertaining to sit with an iced drink and watch them for free for a whole afternoon. One of the women was acting as the base and carrying a huge man on her legs... we were all so impressed!

Ubud is definitely westernised but there is still a lot of culture and Balinese charm there when you stay out of the very chaotic and touristy centre. We visited Canggu where our friend Ali just moved to but it felt a lot more westernised and without any Balinese culture at all really. Apparently it used to be a charming, chill surfer village. It has undergone massive development of luxury hotels, party hostels and restaurants in the last 10 years and now it is a bit of a Magaluf for Aussies! I'd love to go back to Bali one day and explore the whole island rather than just the hotspots. We just have such little time in each place we go to because we have a date when we need to be back in the UK.

  • Day 65–70

    Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia

    April 10 in Malaysia ⋅ ☁️ 31 °C

5 days in Malaysia! I was recovering from a viral infection and trying to eat a lot of food to get my strength back. The food was very tasty there so it wasn't too hard... but we did spend a bit over our food budget oops. It was nice to reunite with Chris again after he left Cambodia to study for his exams and do some solo travel.

The weather was so humid so it was really uncomfortable being outside but we found lots of nice places with air con to spend our time. I had a taxi driver who was surprised and thought it was really cool that I came from Scotland. We were definitely the only tourists in most of the places we went except our hostels. A cafe owner gave us each a postcard with his art on it and I made a hand written note for my family that I was going to send home but we lost them😢. Maybe I will pick one up the next time I see some post cards.

It was nice to be in a country which is a bit more developed for a change while I was recovering but after a while I was itching to get back to a crazy place with less rules and more wild natural beauty! We couldn't wait to explore more of Indonesia together next. Stay tuned for the next penguin post.

We tried to go North to do a nature walk in a big national park but the bus station was too busy due to the end of Ramadan and we couldn't get our bus. It was a shame, but instead Chris got a buzz cut and I got some tattoos so it was definitely a memorable time despite it being so short!

  • Day 48

Yoga Teaching on Koh Ta Kiev, Cambodia

    March 24 in Cambodia ⋅ ☀️ 31 °C

Had an amazing time teaching yoga for the first time since getting certified! I had up to 8 or 9 people in a class and taught a variety of classes like energising flows, backbend flows and slow yin classes. The students gave really positive feedback and I really enjoyed teaching.

The people we met there were really welcoming and funny and we had lots of fun playing card games and getting to know each other. The sunsets were amazing and it was such a simple life, no phones or netflix in sight!

I left after 2 weeks because I got really ill and I didn't feel like they were looking after me very well (plus no air con!). Volunteers are not treated very well compared to guests, I had no energy from being ill and was asked to move all my bags to a new room in the mid day heat and wasnt allowed a plain sandwich on bbq night because the kitchen was closed. No great when you are hanging on for dear life!

I didn't leave on a high but I got what I needed from my time there and I will remember it dearly forever.😌❤️

  • Day 42

    Cambodia

    March 18 in Cambodia ⋅ ⛅ 36 °C

Lots of sight seeing in Cambodia around Siem Reap and Phnom Penh.

Siem Reap was very nice with lots of amazing temples. The people were so kind and humble. I gave some flowers to a little girl and the way she thanked me was so precious, and our tour guide spent his tip on buying us some drinks!

Phnom Penh was really eye opening. We went to the killing fields memorial and learned about the Khmer Rouge genocide. It has had a lasting impact on the country, taking place only about 40 years ago. Every Cambodian knows someone who was killed, whether it was their family or friend. Despite such tragedy so recently, Cambodians are some of the nicest people on the planet. The country is 90% Buddhist and their peaceful beliefs and compassion has given them resilience and hope. It's been really moving to witness.

An experience that will stay with me forever for sure.

  • Day 32

    Thailand

    March 8 in Thailand ⋅ ☀️ 35 °C

A week in Thailand! Got to experience both the beaches of the south and the lush scenery of the north. Too many drunken tourists for my liking and I was ill for about 4 days which limited what activities I could do. Had a bit of bickering with the sister too but was nice to make a few new memories and grateful she was there to help me with electrolytes and crackers! Climbing in Krabi was a dream come true which I ticked off before I got ill, very cool experience in the most amazing scenery :)Read more

  • Day 6

    Ubud, Bali

    February 11 in Indonesia ⋅ 🌩️ 30 °C

Ubud complete! Gorgeous place with a good balance of peaceful and bustling. Oh and Im a certified yoga teacher now😊✨

  • Day 3

    Ubud is so beautiful

    February 8 in Indonesia ⋅ ☁️ 26 °C

I was a bit nervy about doing a few days of solo travel before my YTT starts but it feels safe here. Everyone has been so friendly, both the locals and fellow travellers.

Most travellers I meet are also solo and escaping their stressful lives at home to either live out here and work remotely, or they are doing some healing and wellness to get better. I didn't expect that every person I meet would be doing yoga classes out here. I've seen lots of people journalling and some new friends have been really open with me about their reflections. I feel deeply happy for them to have come so far and been brave enough to come out here all alone. Taking a leap in life is scary but it can be so rewarding.

It's not all rainbows though... the roads are hectic and dangerous for scooters and sometimes there is basically no footpath. There's poverty, mosquitoes, cockroaches, strange smells, heavy rain showers, it's very hot and humid, and you need to watch out for scammers.

I've still not sorted out my sleep cycle but it hasn't stopped me having a lovely time. Feeling incredibly lucky to be here. Fingers crossed I can sleep past 4am tonight😌

    Made it to Ubud!

    February 8 in Indonesia ⋅ ☁️ 31 °C

It was very rainy this morning but after a bit of a mission to get a working sim card and cash out I have made it to my hostel and the sun is glorious! A day by the pool sounds like the perfect way to recover from the journey😌Read more
